Project Sre Rebong
(Not currently running)

About.

Project Sre Robong is a 10- day medical expedition led by a team of medical students and doctors to provide healthcare and education to the neighbouring villages of Siem Reap, Cambodia, namely Sre Robong, Cham Resh, and Chub Smach Village.

This is a pioneer project of HealthEx International that works in partnership with Build Your Future Today Center (BFT), a Cambodian NGO founded in 2006 with a vision to build a better future for Cambodia's youth.

The aim and mission of Project Sre Robong is two-fold - to provide medical aid to the people of Sre Robong, Cham Resh, and Chub Smach in the form of health screening and education programs, mobile clinics, clinical workshops, and home visits; and to cultivate a new generation of healthcare professionals who strive to serve the international community with their expertise

What we do

1. Health Screening Programs and Mobile Clinics
  • We conducted health screenings/mobile clinics over 4 days to over 150 villagers in Sre Robong and Cham Resh. The first day mainly consisted of mobile clinics, where majority of the patients we saw were sick and needed medical attention. The second day saw less sick patients; and as such we opened the clinic to anyone (especially school students) who wanted a health check-up
  • The mobile clinics attended to patients who were sick and needed medical attention. Our team was prepared to dispense medication and perform minor procedures such as wound cleaning.
  • We health screened adults and children for any complications that affected their overall well- being such as visual acuity, hearing, heart and lung problems, and more
  • We split our team up into different stations, pairing each pre-clinical medical student with a clinical student or doctor. We adopted this format for both health screenings and mobile clinics

2. Adult’s Education
  • This was conducted over 3 afternoons in Sre Robong, Cham Resh, and Chub Smach Village, respectively
  • The teaching material targeted health issues commonly occurring within the community - dengue and malaria, diabetes, hypertension, CPR, women’s and  sexual hygiene, hand washing, and dental hygiene.
  • We provided each adult who attended with a set of toiletries including soap, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.
  • For those who attended the sexual health lesson, we distributed condoms to each individual

3. Children’s Education
  • This was conducted over 3 mornings in Sre Robong, Cham Resh, and Chub Smach Village, respectivtely
  • The topics covered were dengue, handwashing, dental hygiene, and smoking
  • Our teaching material involved interactive sessions such as skits by the team, quizzes, and a game of tag to supplement their learning experience
  • Each child was given soap, a toothbrush, and toothpaste

4. Home Visits
  • The purpose of home visits was to see at anyone in the village who was unable to attend our mobile clinics
  • Our team split into two groups – one going to Sre Robong Village and the other going to Cham Resh Village
  • We prepared medical equipment, medications, and gifts to distribute to the villagers

5. Crowdfunding
  • Members of the team reached out to friends and family for contributions to the project mission
  • All donations were used to aid the people of Sre Robong, Cham Resh, and Chub Smach in the form of medical supplies, education material, and infrastructure
  • No donations were used to pay out any cost of the expedition that is not aimed towards the project mission, unless otherwise specified by the Donor’s wishes

6. Long Term Impact
  • With the support from friends and family of the team, we have raised $16,532 SGD and worked with BFT to bring about a long lasting impact to the villages
  • Two deep bore wells were built in Sre Robong Village under the Project Sre Robong name – this will supply water to the villagers for decades
  • We provided each household of 125 families with water filters to promote the practice of drinking clean water
  • Lastly, the remainder of the fund went towards setting up an emergency medical service to transport and cover the expenses of villagers in urgent medical need

About the team

The team consisted of 16 medical volunteers – 12 medical students, 1 physiotherapy student, 1 newly graduated doctor, and 2 doctors (an ENT surgeon and a GP) from Singapore
  • The 2 doctors were involved in health screening and mobile clinics

BUILD YOUR FUTURE TODAY (BFT)

By empowering the Cambodian people with knowledge and education, the main aim of BFT is to help them attain self- sufficiency and enhance their well- being. BFT is committed to providing this opportunity for all people, especially children, who have been living through hardship and poverty caused by the Khmer Rouge from 1975- 1979.

Since its inception, BFT has adopted over 8 villages and provides education to over 25 villages in Cambodia. They are supported by many charity organisations worldwide to provide a better hope and future for Cambodia.

Some of the completed works of BFT include:
