About
Project Cebu is a short-term dental mission trip run by HealthEx International in collaboration with Rise Above Foundation Cebu. The team conducts dental hygiene talks and mobile clinics. Whilst the NGO primarily targets school going children, they also extend their help to community centres where they will serve children and adults. Although this project is in its first year running, HealthEx is well supported by the NGO who well experienced and equipped to handle the provision of dental care.

About The Team
Project Cebu is organised by student volunteers, who are rigorously screened to possess the appropriate competencies, motivations and values in line with HealthEx. They are supported and trained by the HealthEx International team.
Projects applying for the YEP grant are also trained through YEP-endorsed leadership training camps.
Volunteers of dental training or background are welcome to sign up, and are screened to ensure that the team is well equipped to run the project.

Project Location
The team will be depressed areas in the cities of Cebu. The final location will be determined by the NGO once the team size has been confirmed.

Accommodation
The 2019 team stayed at Parklane Cebu Hotel, a 10-15 minute drive to the Rise Above headquarters at Happy Valley. Alternatively, Rise Above Foundation will be able to arrange accommodation at the Children’s Community Centre for 240 USD a week (meals included).
Food
Breakfast and dinners are self -catered, lunch is provided by the NGO
Equipment
All required dental equipment (including sterilisation) will be provided by the NGO. However, participants are strongly encouraged to help the NGO source for dental equipment (The list will be sent to the Leaders later on).

I had the privilege of leading Project Cebu 2025 in the Kaluunasan area of Cebu. Being entrusted with this role pushed me to grow beyond clinical work, particularly in learning how to support the team, adapt to unfamiliar challenges, and make decisions in a resource-limited setting. It was encouraging to see the commitment and resilience of the team, who remained patient-centred and supportive of one another despite long days and limited resources. Working closely with the community deepened my understanding of the realities of limited access to dental care and motivated me to continue contributing in ways that can make a positive impact. |

Project Cebu Covid
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our team could not go down to Cebu as planned this year. The team sought out other ways of helping the Cebu villagers remotely - culminating in Project Cebu Bakes!
All funds raised were channeled towards Rise Above’s Food Sharing and Educational Sponsorship Program. In Cebu, many manual labourers had lost their jobs and only source of income because of the three month lockdown, making it an immense struggle to buy daily necessities to provide for their children.
Through baking, Project Cebu's little team of 6 managed to raise a total of SGD $2540 to support their friends in Philippines.
