About.
Project Cebu is a short-term dental mission trip run by HealthEx International in collaboration with Rise Above Foundation Cebu. The team conducts dental hygiene talks and mobile clinics. Whilst the NGO primarily targets school going children, they also extend their help to community centres where they will serve children and adults. Although this project is in its first year running, HealthEx is well supported by the NGO who well experienced and equipped to handle the provision of dental care.

About the team
Project Cebu is organised by student volunteers, who are rigorously screened to possess the appropriate competencies, motivations and values in line with HealthEx. They are supported and trained by the HealthEx International team.
Projects applying for the YEP grant are also trained through YEP-endorsed leadership training camps.
Volunteers of dental training or background are welcome to sign up, and are screened to ensure that the team is well equipped to run the project.

- 250 USD/person (~ 345 SGD) as Admin Fees to Rise Above Foundation
- This covers lunch during Mission Days, dental material costs and transport from Rise Above HQ to place of Mission)
- 3,000 pesos/day (~ 81 SGD/day) to hire a Filipino dentist to oversee the Dental Mission by Filipino Law. The more people there are in the team, the more Filipino dentists to be hired as each dentist will be in charge of 3 dental students & dentists. (Rise Above hired 2 dentists per day for our 2019 dental mission = 6,000 pesos/day)
- 850 pesos travel tax (~27 SGD) to be paid at the Cebu airport to use their premises.

Project Location
The team will be depressed areas in the cities of Cebu. The final location will be determined by the NGO once the team size has been confirmed.

Accommodation
The 2019 team stayed at Parklane Cebu Hotel, a 10-15 minute drive to the Rise Above headquarters at Happy Valley. Alternatively, Rise Above Foundation will be able to arrange accommodation at the Children’s Community Centre for 240 USD a week (meals included).
Food
Breakfast and dinners are self -catered, lunch is provided by the NGO
Equipment
All required dental equipment (including sterilisation) will be provided by the NGO. However, participants are strongly encouraged to help the NGO source for dental equipment (The list will be sent to the Leaders later on).

Overview
Rise Above Foundation Cebu was established in November 2000. They strive to improve the quality of life for the poor and underprivileged through the provision of education, livelihood training and health and hygiene programs.

- Dental missions
- Establishment of a Children’s Library in which volunteers teach the children through songs, skits, reading and playing
- Establishment of a Family Care Center to support underprivileged families and also operates as a childminding center and training and livelihood center for mothers.
- Alternative Learning System (ALS) program that provides free high school education to 35 youths and young adults. The Department of Education supports the program by supplying teachers.
- Livelihood program that teaches mothers of the children at their Family Care Center how to upcycle materials

pROJECT CEBU 2020
Though I was a little disheartened that the circumstances did not allow us to be in Cebu this year, I was comforted and reassured that the funds raised went a long way in supporting the villagers in improving their basic needs and oral health.
The staff at Rise Above Cebu have truly touched the lives of so many Filipinos over this tough period and I look up to them with so much awe and respect, especially with what Gabe told me last year, “We are not a rich foundation, we just pray ceaselessly and depend on God’s everlasting provision”. "

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, our team could not go down to Cebu as planned this year. The team sought out other ways of helping the Cebu villagers remotely - culminating in Project Cebu Bakes!
All funds raised were channeled towards Rise Above’s Food Sharing and Educational Sponsorship Program. In Cebu, many manual labourers had lost their jobs and only source of income because of the three month lockdown, making it an immense struggle to buy daily necessities to provide for their children.
Through baking, Project Cebu's little team of 6 managed to raise a total of SGD $2540 to support their friends in Philippines.
