Our Beneficiaries.
‘28 Thulana’ is a Grama Niladhari division in Kebithigollewa divisional secretariat division in Anuradhapura district. It consists of three villages namely Kanugahawewa, Nikawewa and Thalgahawewa. According to the statistics, there are 320 families living in Kanugahawewa. They have been displaced during the civil war and resettled back to their places. Due to the resettlement, prevailing arid climate conditions and related other issues, they face hardship in their day-to-day living.
The main income of these villagers is around the agriculture, working as labourers in agricultural fields, farming cash crops or working as tenant farmers. At the same time, some women work illegally in sex trade. Kanugahawewa being a highly remote area, it is common wild elephants destroy crops or invade
villages in search of food. Due to this elephant-human conflict insecurity, property damages, loss of harvest and income is common and occasionally injuries and death are also reported.
This village is highly remote and around 15 kilometres away from the Kebithigollewa town. Their connection to the nearby town is by a single bus service operating only 4-5 times per day, limits villagers travelling out of the village for better health, education and other services. The same reason prevents them attending for the health clinic for mothers and infants, held in the Halmillawatiya which is 4km away from their village. Therefore, these communities are highly marginalized. This results in low health awareness among families leading to health issues such as malnutrition among the children, prolonged disease conditions such as skin diseases due to not taking required medicine or medical advice on time. Health related problems are aggravated due their low educational levels, marriages among the relatives, addiction to illicit liquor, low income levels and drinking water related kidney disease. Women are not well aware on their sanitary health and other health issues.
As HealthEx sees the need for health services in the marginalized communities of Sri Lanka, we have decided to collaborate with FoSE for the next few years.
